As women’s bodybuilding became more extreme, an opportunity arose for a less muscular, more toned forum, thus was born the Fitness Olympia competition in 1995.

In its early years Fitness Olympia went through various judging formats before settling on the present format of four rounds of judging. As a result, this revolutionary period bore a succession of five one-time champs, the first being Mia Finnegan in 1985, followed by Saryn Muldrow in 1996; Carol Semple-Marzetta in 1997; Monica Brant in 1998 and Mary Yockey in 1999.

This pattern was broken in 2000 when Susan Currey took the title and held it for four years before retiring.

She was succeeded by Adela Garcia-Friedmansky in 2004. The current Fitness Olympia titleholder is Jen Hendershott who won in 2005.
